Phone will not connect abroad

How frustrating i had an issue with my phone not connecting when in Lanzarotte in the summer and spend a couple of hours talking roe virgin from home - who saidy setting were correct! Just landed in US and NO connection.

i have been through all forums and tried to chate with virgin - but can seem to find anyone tk connect to - im desparate, any ideas
