I've tried that but the number does not save and it reverts to the previous number.

Are you able to try rebooting the handset and trying the number change again?
If this doesn't work do you get an error message at all when you press save?

Have tried rebooting the handset and changing the number again to no avail.
When I hit Save after changing the number it just goes back to the previous screen and shows the previous number.

Can I ask if you have been able to try the SIM in another hand set at all and see if the number shows on another handset?

I have now found an old handset and inserted the SIM. That handset showed the correct, transferred, number.
I've now put the SIM back into the other handset but it still displays the temporary number and I am unable to change it.
