Online says 5G coverage. Customer support says no 5G coverage.

The Virgin mobile online coverage checker says I have 5G in my location and good indoor coverage in my road in South Croydon.

My (Ultimate Oomph) Samsung S20+ 5G only ever connects at 4g+

I spoke to someone using the online chat who confirmed that I do have a 5G enabled sim/plan but that 5G isn't available in my area.

think I'm on Vodafone.  How do I properly check?  Another post on this forum said that if when manually listing mobile networks EE was shown and Vodafone not shown that the phone is most likely on Vodafone...

Is 5G showing in your network types and is VoLTE showing as being active?

If I go to settings/connections/mobile networks:
VoLTE call's is "on"
Network mode is "5g/LTE/3g/2g (auto connect)"

I also have a little "Vo LTE1" icon in the status bar at the top of the phone screen.

So is it a phone issue then? The connection in the status bar only says 4G+ (Both indoors and outdoors).

All the latest Samsung/Android updates are installed.

You would need to try it in a couple of places to see. Maps are not totally accurate

Re: Online says 5G coverage. Customer support says no 5G coverage.

Both the Virgin (and Vodafone) coverage maps say good 5G indoors and outdoors.  I have tried in a couple of different locations (work & supermarket - can't do much more in lockdown...)

Virgin says:

5G.JPG

However 5G.co.uk says different..

5G_2.JPG

I'm getting 90Mbps download on 4G+ and around 400Mbps download on wifi so am not too fussed - just curious to know if it is the phone at issue if there is in fact 5G in this area as indicated by the Virgin/Vodafone maps.

Re: Online says 5G coverage. Customer support says no 5G coverage.

I found a Vodafone 5G mast nearby (on a lockdown walk) and lo and behold the phone connected to 5G.  Several speedtests later and the 60Mbps download speed proved slower than the 90Mbps I get on 4G+ at home.. 🙄

Re: Online says 5G coverage. Customer support says no 5G coverage.

The problem is the system is only part set up. The networks need more bandwidth and that will only come as the extra frequencies are released by OFCOM and more 3G spectrum re farmed.

There also appears to be some problem between Vodafone and Virgin where people are getting poor speeds

I'm with Vodafone direct and 212 Mbps is average for me

Yep, 5g is definitely a work in progress nationwide. It will take time to get better and cover more areas. Id give it another year or so personally.
