New sim newworked locked

I put the new purple sim in a couple of weeks back and it didn't work, and i rang 789, they informed my one would still work, i asked 3 times to be sure, today my old sim says no network and when i put the purple one back in, it says invalid sim card and network locked sim card inserted, 

can someone please advise, thanks

Almost Certainly your phone is Network Locked. As the old SIM worked it will be locked to EE. 

Were did you buy the phone?

Thanks for the reply, i rang EE and they were great, even though my account was from a few years ago, they gave me a number on the phone to put in at the unlock screen and now it's working fine, although i did ask at the end of my contract in 2016 to unlock the phone, also 789 told me a load of lies aswell, i haven't got much faith in them, but it's sorted now, thankfully
