New sim card wrong card message

Got an old Samsung SGH-C300 and i recieved a new sim card, told in the accompanied letter to replace my current sim card with this new one but when i put the card in and switch on all i get is a message saying wrong card, can anyone help with how to solve or what to do next ?

Needs an unlocking code most likely. Virgin may have sent it on the letter

However, there is a chance the phone is too old to work with the new card properly
