New sim card not registered

I received a letter with a new sim card, which told me to replace in my phone in 14 days. Unfortunately, I took out .t old SIM card and disposed of it, and replaced it with the new SIM card without reading the full instructions re texting 'Ready' to 789678. I now can't make or receive calls or messages because 'not registered on network'. How do I resolve this?
