I have just taken out a new sim only contract on the basis that it would be served by the EE network (as stated on the Virgin and Uswitch websites). Once new sim was installed and activated my phone states network is O2. I live in rural Lincolnshire and coverage on O2 at my home address is almost non-existant, with the best coverage being with EE or Vodafone. I understand that Virgin used both these networks as they were a 'virtual network', can I change networks ?

I don't think its possible, they're migrating everyone to o2 eventually.
If your still able to cancel under a cooling off period, Id do that now and find a contract with an EE provider (BT, Plusnet etc)

Oh OK thanks for the quick reply - pity they don't advertise this to avoid wasting peoples time ☹️

No. Plenty of information on U-Switch is out of date....and not just concerning Virgin either.
All customers will be on O2 shortly.
If you are within 14 days you can cancel penalty free

U-Switch are showing 12 month SIM only deals on Virgin. But if you check Virgin's website you will find all SIM only are now 30 days through them!
