New Sim not working

I lost my phone a couple of weeks ago and requested a new sim (PAYG). I have received this and put it into my old phone (Sony M4 Aqua). However, the new sim is not working. I do not get any signal bars and it doesn't seem to recognise the sim. It did not ask for a pin when I put it in. I cannot activate it. I cannot log in online as I have forgotten my password and to request a new one, it wants to Send a text to my mobile number which I can't receive!
