New SIM not working

My error message seems to differ from others.  I put the new SIM in, switch on and get the message "Insert correct SIM card".  I cannot enter anything else.  It is an old phone that works perfectly well with the old SIM but presumably I am now going to be cut off unless I buy a new phone.
