New SIM has locked my phone!

I changed my simcard for the new one virgin sent me and followed the directions on the covering letter. I was asked for a PIN code and the letter stated this was 7890. I tried this and it didn't work. After retrying, the phone was locked up.. I have tried to contact Virgin media but I'm just sent round in a loop to nowhere. Can you help?

The PIN code in question would have been the Network Unlock Code. Or Unblock code as Virgin call it and not the SIM PIN code.
