New SIM card not working

Received new purple Sim card recently and inserted in phone (LG KC550 purchased in 2009 locked to Virgin network). Received text to say new SIM is up and running followed by message on screen “Insert right SIM card”. There were no requests for any unlock codes. Phone can now only be used for emergency calls and cannot even get menu on screen. Old SIM no longer works - “Rejected by Network”. I think the problem may be that this old phone is networked locked ? Can't call or text customer services to ask them to unlock as phone no longer works.  Did try calling on a non Virgin landline but the waiting time was 40 mins and I am reluctant to run up a large bill on someone else's phone.

Hoping someone may be able to help me resolve this.
