New SIM card does not work

I have been sent a new SIM card for my very old Nokia pay as you go phone. I only use it for emergencies. When I put the new SIM card in I got the message "SIM not valid". I understand that unless I get it working within 10 days I will be unable to send or receive calls. What can I do?
