Little to no 4G

Keato

Hi, after reading most of the posts here regarding 4G signal I’m assuming everyone is going to have signal problems for the forceable future until the migration has been finalised.

My issue is the speeds / being kicked off 4G.
Recently I upgraded my sim only package and prior to this I had very, very fast 4G signal. As soon as we finished the call with Virgin our signal went from 4G to less than 1mb 3G. I’m guessing we were previously on vodaphone’s masts then the call to upgrade the package forced through a migration to O2’s.

I understand we’ll all be moving to O2 which is fair enough. I’ve been on various sites to check where the nearest O2 masts are to where I live (Neilston, wee village just outside Glasgow). We have a few nearby but we still get incredibly slow 3G speeds.

Is there a timeframe on this migration or can VM shed any light as to why after a call to upgrade our SIM only package we were booted onto very slow 3G speeds. Not that device matters but I’m using an iPhone 14 pro max, family member has a iPhone 14. If we take our sims out and put them back in the previous phones (iPhone 7, Sony Xperia) it’s the same problem so it’s definitely not a hardware problem.

If I manually select Virgin from network selection I get 1 bar of 4G then about 20 seconds later it reverts to 3 bars 3G. If I select ‘automatic’ it always selects the 3G

looking forward to hearing from anyone with an insight 😊

cheers,

Jamie

Welcome back to our Community Forums! Thank you for your first post and I'm very sorry to hear that you're having some ongoing issues with your data at the moment.

Have you been able to take a look at our O2 Coverage Checker to see if this can help with your ongoing issue? You can also take a look at our Mobile Data issues page to see if this can help.

Let us know how you get on and if you need any further assistance going forward.

Thank you.

From O2 Status Checker. If 4G is oversubscribed you may drop to 3G. Speeds will be very slow at times

well this sucks. Seems Neilston isn’t in the 4G area on O2. The screenshot below shows vodaphones catchment area and O2’s

Would be nice if O2 installed a wee mast up here for us.

for colours:

5G is purple

4G+ is dark red

4G regular is orange

3G is Green

going by that it looks like there’s no green 3G signal at all in Neilston so that would explain my low bars and around 1mb speed.

Many apologies for the issues faced Keato,

Welcome back to the community.

Just to clarify on this is the signal poor just in that area?

Secondly is this a recent issue?

Let us know,

Kain

Hey

oh it’s not just that area. There are other blackspots where 4G is non existent since the O2 migration. I was just zooming into where I live. I’m sure there are loads of others affected by the migration.

It’s recent, It happened after changing our mobile package to another one. Im assuming it kickstarted the migration to O2 earlier than planned.
At the end of the day my wee village is now equal to pre 3G speeds. Edge speeds essentially ever since the switch from vodaphone to O2

Thanks for conforming for us Keato,

We're sorry to hear that you're affected in most area that you visit. As our valued member @enlli has advised, unfortunately, if an area is experiencing heavy traffic, your will drop down to 3G speeds.

We do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Kind regards Jodi.

O2 Map shows 4G coverage in the area

The drop pin is the location of the mast which I guess is the one with problems

Interesting

last I knew it was a vodaphone only mast. I used to work near that mast since it’s a locked area I was told if a company comes looking to do work on the mast it’s vodaphone as it’s their mast.

they must share it with O2 but throttle O2’s users since it’s a vodaphone mast.

oh well, looks like if I want any 4G when I leave the house I’ll need to head down to Barrhead lol

Most likely a Cornerstone mast. They are shared O2 and Vodafone. My nearest mast is the same.
