Compulsory Sim Swap 2020 - Insert Correct Sim Card error message

I have been on a virgin pay as you go tariff since approx 2012.

My phone is a SonyEricsson J110i

The sim card was one of the old style red ones.

Only ever kept it in the car for emergencies and have had no issues whatsoever.....until now.

I've just been sent a new sim card as part of Virgin's compulsory sim swap.  I've inserted the new sim as instructed but when I switch on the phone, all I get is an error message "Insert Correct Sim Card" and I am unable to progress any further.

I've tried contacting Virgin Help using the online chat facility but after 3 hours I still haven't had any response.  Notwithstanding the current difficulties, that's pretty shoddy, so I'm hoping someone in the Community Forum might be able to assist.

Has anyone any ideas what course of action I can take?
