Can't register new SIM no signal

Hey,
I am trying to swap to the new SIM however I have been unable to use my old SIM card for a while now as it just will not give me signal. So now I cannot set up the new SIM as I need to text a number from the old one to activate the new SIM. 
I have checked and the old SIM is not blocked it just wont pick any signal at all.
