3G and SIM

My wife's, very old, phone is 3G only. 

Whilst trying to use the new SIM (arrived today), the default security PIN is rejected three times and I get the message 'Contact Service Provider' (who are shut). The phone will not work.

On the Virgin website, I entered the IMEI code and I get the message 'sorry your device isn't supported'. I left a message for support and they promised to ring me - which is a waste of time as the phone is not working!

Does this mean I have to buy a new phone?
