Unable To Play Recordings

I have things recorded on my Tivo Box from a couple of years ago.

When I tried to view them recently I was told I couldn't watch them as Virgin no longer carried that channel.

I don't understand this. Surely it's already recorded and saved to the hard drive? Why am I not allowed to access them?

(One of the channels has gone from STV to STV HD and so won't let me access those taped on STV).
