Any ideas how to get out of this please...we have tried restarting the system...

Try calling 0800 5610061 (check for local area faults) as the first check, incase there's a reported fault causing this.
If not... you're going to have to call TV Faults (150 from a VM phone, 0345 4541111 otherwise) to report your faulty box. They open from 8am
