Subtitles on BBC flashing 888 up in the corner

Recently the Subtitles on BBC are flashing 888 up in the corner at regular intervals when the subtitles are on. Any clue why this is happening and how to stop it?

It appeared during the beginning credits of pointless.

How did they fix it? I didn't see a software update to my TV box.

I’ve restarted my v6 box. It’s looking better. 
I’ll confirm later.

We've been having this problem on our Tivo for a little while now.

It's hard enough to persuade my OH to put the subtitles on and this 888 problem is causing arguments.

It's definitely not fixed in this house.

The restart seems to have fixed it.

Update. The restart didn't work. It's still happening. 888 appeared during the credits at the end of 'Homes Under The Hammer' this morning.
