DVR has detected serious problem

My dad is getting this message on the TV. Started on Wednesday and has tried all the suggested troubleshoots.

We think he may need a new box judging by other posts here. Can you help?

I'm not sure the pic has worked. It says The DVR has detected a serious problem and is now attempting to fix it.
