Is chromecast first gen not compatible with hub 3 for streaming Netflix. Can’t set it up with new Virgin box

how do you mean? are you able to get the chromecast connected to the wireless network? Are you able to use other streaming apps, just not netflix?

It wouldn't be the first time the hub has a compatibility problem with devices so get your own wireless router with 1Gb ports and use the hub in modem mode.

I can’t connect the chromecast to the new WiFi network and google home won’t find the chromecast device either. 
I’ve not tried other streaming apps

Try logging into the hub and renaming the 2.4 wifi. Save and exit. Chromecast should then just see the 2.4 and be able to connect
