Implication if any for intruder alarm system when downgrading with Virgin

Hi,

Can anyone please help? I have an Elite alarm system which uses wifi. I am at present on 200Mbit but wish to downgrade to a slower speed but still with Virgin. My question is, will my router's address, hardware or anything else etc. change, meaning that the alarm will have to be reprogrammed?

Many thanks

Rico

Your IP address can change anytime regardless of speed changes.

Nothing else should alter that should affect your alarm system.

Sorry if I am using this forum wrongly -not familiar with it! To amplify my question a littlle more after your reply.... I am not not a techie either I must add!

My reason for asking is that when I moved from Plusnet to Virgin the alarm would not work.  Would this be because of a different IP address and would I be ok if I stayed with Virgin but just downgraded or would there be a similar problem as when I changed provider?

Apologies in advance!

Hi @Rico2

It's not the same as switching networks from one provider to another.

There wouldn't be the same problem if you downgraded to a lower speed as you would still be with VM and using the same equipment.

VM's IP addresses can change at any time, but they are mainly sticky.

Mine only changed when I received a new hub, prior to that it remained the same for 5 years.

Your IP address might change if VM perform updates to the network system local to you

The HUB will be broadcasting a completely different SSID (Network Name) vs your old provider so yes, the alarm would need to be updated to connect using the new SSID and password.

Downgrading will not change the SSID or password.

Brilliant Carl. Thank you👍👍👍

That's just what I wanted to know. Thank you very much😊
