virgin 1gb

will an upgrade to 1gb improve my latency? I tried using the BQM at https://www.thinkbroadband.com/ but it doesnt seem to work with my VM(modem mode)/GoogleNest router combo. Are there any other tools i can use to try & pinpoint poor drops in my connection before i plunge into 1gb. And finally, is 1gb full fttp, ie fibre will be installed to the actual VM hub?

lots of questions.. but i'm reluctant to go 1gb unless it really will be better!

In a word no.

And no, you'll continue to use copper cabling even on Gig1, which it's more than capable of providing as long as the local infrastructure isn't oversubscribed.

Thanks for the insight carl_pearce, that’s helped a lot!

The BQM should work in any setup, but remember that you will need to change the IP setting when you change the Hub from router to modem mode, and if you change the router.

Thanks jpeg1, I’ll give it another go tomorrow, I was just getting solid red, nothing else. The VMhub is always in modem mode. If I go to whatsmyip.org that shld be the right IP address for BQM right?

Yes.

Hey @Timpd,

Welcome back to the community and thanks for taking the time to post.

I'm sorry to hear of the issues that you're having with latency on your connection, has there been any improvements since you last posted on Tuesday night?

I have looked into this on our system and cannot see any issues with your connection or in the local area that would be causing these issues.

Have you been able to get the BQM setup as that will help us to find more about the issues that you're having.

Regards,

Steven_L

haven't figured it out yet..

As you are in modem mode - There is something in your Google nest that is causing this. Probably set to not respond to ICMP echorequests - pings

Mooch around in the settings for something like...

• Wireless > Advanced Settings > Advanced > Ping > Respond to ICMP echo requests sent to WAN IP

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 1 WiFi, 1 on PA) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's. On 250Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

Hey Timpd, thank you for reaching out and I am sorry to hear you are having some connection issues.

Also thank you for sending his screenshot over.

Okay, please can you confirm if you have your router in modem mode and have you tried the steps jbrennand has offered out?

Please do let me know. Thanks
