upload speed being throttled?

It seems I am not the only one seeing upload speeds reducing from the usual 10 Mbps to below 1 Mbps (often well below) between 9am and 6pm.  For me personally this has been going on for about a week.  Is Virgin deliberately throttling upload speeds in my area,  is it a fault on their network or is it just too many people on video calls?

Re: upload speed being throttled?

Please do this before the Hub Data

If possible can you set up a Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at thinkbroadband.com - this will give you an insight into what is happening with the signal at the other side of the Hub, it will take a few hours to get any kind of trend showing although you should post the link straight away.

Please post a 'Live Link' to your BQM on here straight away.

Instructions for posting BQM Live Link

Under your BQM graph are two links in red.

Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then click generate.

Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see.

On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon)

In the URL box paste the link you copied and in the ‘text to display’ box write My BQM then click OK - you can post the link straight away.

Re: upload speed being throttled?

Can you please

Type 192.168.0.1 (192.168.100.1 in Modem mode) into your browser URL bar and press enter.

Hub 2 & 3 When the page appears DO NOT LOG IN but click ‘Check Router Status’.

Hub 4 When the page appears LOG IN then Advanced Settings > Tools > Network Status.

Copy and paste the contents of the Downstream, Upstream, Configuration and Network Log tabs onto here, if you get a yellow / straw box warning click the Post button again.

Use one post for each tab if you wish.

Please do not use screen shots.

A Guru will be along soon to decipher the info.

Re: upload speed being throttled?

Your >> BQM << is showing typical signs of over utilisation.

A good friend of the forums @Andruser has commented on the forum about similar problems to yours ...

Re: upload speed being throttled?

Hub stats look OK to me. BQM confirms the problem and broadly speaking, yes, too many people on video calls (or "essential usage" of Twitch).

In the short term nothing can realistically be done - you tolerate it, or you leave, with all that leaving implies. For some people leaving is the fastest fix and the right thing to do, but before even considering this do your research. VM aren't the only ISP struggling in some areas, but on Openreach if there's a problem it's far more commonly download contention. A competent ISP should know if this applies to your location.

If it is Covid related then in a few months hopefully it goes away. If it doesn't go away post panic-demic, then it's simply down to over-selling by VM of capacity that doesn't exist on your segment.  And the remedy is then again, tolerate with limited prospect of it being fixed, or leave.

I'm a Very Insightful Person, I'm here to share knowledge, I don't work for Virgin Media. Learn more

Re: upload speed being throttled?

Thank you @Andruser.  One further question - if I upgraded to M200 would I get a better upload speed if there is still general over utilisation or is everyone in the same boat for upload when the network is clogged?

Re: upload speed being throttled?

You could compare it to racing in knee deep mud against an Olympic 100m runner, he would win but the difference wouldn't be as great as racing on a track.
