slow and inconsistent broadband speed

For the past few weeks, I have been getting very slow broadband speeds. At best, download speed has been ~30mbps and at worst, 0.14mbps which is close to dial-up speed and not at all acceptable, as this renders browsing the web unbearable having an impact upon my productivity as I am currently working from home (I have an IT job!). My upload speed has been between ~0.5-10mbps. What I should however be getting is 200mbps down and 20 up.

I have tried calling Virgin Media, unfortunately no agent is available and the connection drops shortly after the reset.

One strange thing that occurs is during certain times during evenings I will be getting ~40mbps down and ~10mbps up, however as soon as I turn youtube on the whole internet becomes dial-up speed. Then I turn off youtube and speeds are bearable (but not what I am paying for). I was under the impression that throttling ended years ago, however it seems the opposite?

I would appreciate if this can be looked into ASAP as this has been an ongoing issue and isn't acceptable.

I take it you are connecting to the Hub using Wi-Fi ?

Can you set up a Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at thinkbroadband.com - this will give you an insight into what is happening with the signal at the other side of the Hub, it will take a few hours to get any kind of trend showing although you should post the link straight away.

Post a link to your BQM on here.

Instructions for posting BQM Link

Under your BQM graph are two links in red.

Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then click generate.

Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see.

On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon)

In the URL box paste the link you copied and in the ‘text to display’ box write My BQM then click OK - you can post the link straight away.

Type 192.168.0.1 (192.168.100.1 in Modem mode) into your browser URL bar and press enter. 

When the page appears DO NOT LOG IN but click ‘Check Router Status’.

Copy and paste the contents of the Downstream, Upstream and Network Log tabs onto here, if you get a yellow warning click the Post button again.

A Guru will be along soon to decipher the info.

Hey Anon333.
Is there any chance you're using an app or service which extensively uses UDP connections (like torrents, VPNs, VOIP, Microsoft Teams, BBC iPlayer)?

Hi Anon333, did you get this resolved? I am having inconsistent speeds also. I'm on M350 but randomly get 10-50mbs. I am also seeing a lot of these critical and warning messages but don't know what any of it means.

Welcome and thank you for posting. 

 

I am very sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with the broadband service. 

Are you able to confirm if the speed is dropping on both wired and wireless connections? If so, can you please run a speed test for both connections and post the results?
