intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

hello all.

fairly recently i have noticed latency spikes, randomly throughout the day, so i wrote a short script from my linux server to log ping times, and what i have found is perplexing.

the ping log i recorded is in the next post,  i exceeded the character limit.

there doesn't seem to be any real pattern to this, during these times the hub is inaccessible or at best extremely slow to respond.

my network setup is unconventional, using a pfsense router machine, and a separate asus router to provide the wifi for our household, with the hub in modem mode (having previously attempted to use it as a router, it was promptly switched back to modem).

the above ping times persist occurring randomly until i reboot the hub, after which it acts perfectly normally for 2-3 days.

currently the hub's admin pages are inaccessible after the recent high pings.

while typing this a speedtest.net result has provided 323Mbps down and 36Mbps up from my desktop pc (core i7 4790k, 24GB ram, 1Gb network ethernet to 1Gb switch, into router, to hub). i have also run tests from a home server (using speedtest.net command line) and have achieved similar results.

here are the readouts from the hub's status pages:

The information below shows current status of this Hub 3.0.

Re: intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

Hi KernelFergus,

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having some issues with your broadband service.

I've had a look at the back end of your services and there doesn't seem to be any real issues that could be causing the instability.

Can you please confirm if you are still experiencing problems today or whether there has been any improvements since posting?

Kindest regards,

Beth

Re: intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

hi Beth_G.

last night didnt seem to have any major issues, but the time it most often happens is when im talking with my friends online or one of us is playing online games, neither of which happened last night.

however, when i created the thread i started a TBB quality monitor and it shows some scattered spikes, some of which are quite high:

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/ca370060d1544a5a9ccdf5d1c067ecbf36667ba6-04-06-2020

my custom script only pings once every 5 seconds, so it may be missing some of the peaks that the TBB monitor catches.

also, i rebooted it just before i posted this thread and its is usually better for 1-2 days after rebooting.

Re: intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

EDIT: just to add, i checked the TBB monitor this evening, and there is a severe spike at around 1515 in the afternoon, bad enough that some packets were actually lost:

Re: intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

further update: the ping spikes are still happening, so just to attempt to eliminate another variable, i switched from pfsense to an older (but still capable) asus router.

here is the chart from the time i switched the router (the large packet loss block is the time i switched):

Re: intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

I'm having the same issue as you I can't access the modem page until I reboot it and the ping spikes look the same too.

Re: intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

it appears that switching router has not changed anything regarding this issue (i didnt believe it would) and switching to a less capable router actually appears to have worsened ping times on the whole, but by very little.

here is a link to the chart that i have captured in the last 24 hours:

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/52db628b0565c1e4c3ab51bf202d0ca674...

i have also captured an image of the chart and annotated the suspect areas:
circled in blue is the packet loss that results
circled in white is the suspect ping spike. note the dramatic increase in average but no increase in minimum.
circled in pink is a strange DECREASE in minimum ping, a small increase in the average and a large increase to the maximum around the time of the dramatic jump iump in pings.

Re: intermittent latency spikes until modem/hub 3 reboot

I have been able to look into your account KernelFergus and cant see anything that would be causing the issues with the ping spikes.

How has your connection been running since you last posted on Sunday?
