Yet Another Slow Download Speed Thread

A few weeks ago I noticed something was amiss with our normally reliable 200Mbs broadband connection, when everything in the house seemed to slow down somewhat.  Although an inconvenience, it wasn't a major problem, so I didn't report the issue.  Last week I finally got round to doing a speed test from a wired connection (via a Gigabit NIC, connected directly to the Hub 3.0) and was shocked to find I was unable to get better than 20-25 Mbs download speeds, although upload was fine, at around 20Mbs). I've been through the usual rigmarole of calling the faults line, doing a factory reset, changing cables etc. with no change. Finally, I got through to somebody who agreed an engineer visit was needed, and that is booked for Friday.

I was a little surprised that the CS rep didn't ask me for any diagnostics information from the hub, and I thought it would be helpful to the engineer if they had that information before they visit, to save some time. I'm just posting the status details from the hub, in case one of the forum mods wants to add it to my service call details, as I've been unable to find a way to do this myself.

Hopefully I'll be able to get a resolution this week, as the situation seems to be getting worse; I've been getting download speeds of less than 10 Mbs at times, which I haven't seen for around 15 years!

Re: Yet Another Slow Download Speed Thread

The bad news is that your hub's status data is all rudely healthy.  Which means that you have a good connection to the CMTS that joins VM's real fibre optic network to the coax that does the last few hundred yards.

Potentially this is a further utilisation issue - ask the technician (assuming one turns up).  If it, the only reliable fix is to leave VM.

Re: Yet Another Slow Download Speed Thread

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully it isn't a utilisation issue, as I notice the same problem whatever the time may be when I've checked (even in the middle of the night).

Re: Yet Another Slow Download Speed Thread

Well, following the engineer's visit on Friday, the problem is fixed 😁

There was a 6dB forward path attenuator, that VM had fitted to fix problems that we had when broadband was first installed (in 2005). It seems that since the network in our area had been upgraded, there was no more need for it. I had actually asked if I should remove it on one of my previous calls to the fault line, and I got no response from the support rep.  Anyway, after removing the attenuator and fitting a new connection into the hub, all was back to where it should be. My wife even noticed a difference, as she can now play Tetris 99 on her Switch without getting disconnected 😂.

One thing I did find out was that the speedtest.net test is totally inaccurate on Windows via a browser (Edge or Chrome), as it still showed much lower speeds than my phone and tablet.  The standalone app worked perfectly, so it seems that for faster connections the browser is unable to accurately process the test results.  Interestingly, this information appears not to have made it to the VM support staff, as I was asked to run a speedtest on the website when testing. and even the engineer who visited was not aware of the standalone Windows app.

Anyway, all is good and I'm happy again.
