High pings could be you downloading or uploading but if your idle VM might be doing silly ping/speed tests to your hub (when fine) use modem mode to stop that.
Or your upstream is being fully loaded by others with router mode and VM speed test pinning the upstream high and causing spikes. Great idea VM! Now you can cause ping spikes that would unwise not happen!
