Re: Terrible speds

I've updated the drivers to the Network Interface Card (NIC) and download speeds are no better. Uploads match the ones I have just run on my old laptop. Looks like something is stopping the down speed.

So I check my speeds on my old laptop (connected by cable to the router) and got 80Mbps down and 20 up.

Looks like something on the pc is slower things down? How do I work out what it is?

It could be ...

The NIC isn't gigabit capable, that will prevent you getting anything over 100MBs.

The NIC is gigabit capable but the drivers are out of date.

The cable you are using is Cat5 or lower.

The cable is Cat 5E or above but is 'flakey'.

Re: Terrible speds

To answer:

1. No idea but will check.

2. Latest drivers installed.

3. Cat5E cable used.

4. Brand new capable.

Need to check my NIC I guess but even so it should be giving me more than 8 - 10Mbps down!

Re: Terrible speds

They are probably waiting to report back on the specs of your NIC card.  Mind you said you were getting 80 down in an earlier post.  I would suggest its something on you device that is limiting speeds - here are some recent reasons that have been posted on here - there may be some clues in there.

Re: Terrible speds

Thanks for that. A bit of reading to do!

The NIC card is a "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" with the latest drivers.

Re: Terrible speds

Thanks to all who helped me with this. Appreciated. I have managed to resolve this issue which was down to a small app called SmartByte on my Dell pc throttling the speeds. This has now been disabled and all is good. Speeds now:
