Speed very slow intermittently

Hi,

Our speed keeps dropping and becomes almost unusable at times.

just been upgraded to a new Hub 3.0 and worse than before. someone said it could be to do with power levels.

any thoughts would be appropriated

Re: Speed very slow intermittently

Upstream power levels too high:

These values are actually 51 as the HUB 3 reports a decimal out.

Your downstream power levels are quite low as well, however in spec (-6 to +10).

You need VM to investigate further.

Re: Speed very slow intermittently

RS error counts might be a worry - to check it out can you reboot the Hub and check they reset to 0. Then see if they start reappearing in the next few hours/days - they shouldn't - particularly the postRS ones.

See if anything else changes - and post up your network logs as well.

Re: Speed very slow intermittently

Mmm... the errors are getting corrected ok though (PostRS=0). But if your up power levels are still at the top of the range (51) it will need looking at by someone from VM.

You didnt say whether yu get "drop outs" or is it just speed issues?

In the meantime try this

----
First do a quick check that all of your coax cable connections are in nice and "finger" tight - at the Hub and wall box and also at any splitters/attenuators/etc. Ensure there are no “unterminated cable loose ends. Disconnect all the connections and reconnect to be sure. Also check that the internal wiring is ok with no kinking or chaffing, check that all looks good with the outside cabling and wall box.

Then do a Hub “pinhole reset” a lot of VM techs will ask you to try it first - disconnect any ethernet cables and with the Hub "switched on" throughout, press pin in firmly with paper clip/SIM tray tool (or similar) and hold it there firmly for 60 seconds – release the pin then leave it 10’ to stabilise. But, make sure the 2 passwords on the Hub sticker are still there and legible first !

Also, in the meantime, if you haven’t already, its worth setting up a free “Broadband Quality Monitor” to continually monitor the state of your connection and record any true network dropouts - it will thus allow you to differentiate between those and simple wifi dropouts. It does it 24/7/365 and it keeps a visual record of any/all of your network disconnections, useful data to have to match to the Network logs (in your Hub settings) and also in discussions with VM - note it will take a few hours to start seeing a sensible picture - post up the “link” when you have the first 24h period.

Re: Speed very slow intermittently

hmmmmm as above - keep your eyes on the pre rs errors but the few you have could be nothing - the line/hub will see a few on boot up - if they do not rise they they should not be a worry

i dont disagree with the comment about upstream levels being high/max at 5.1 [51] but VM might - they have been recently saying 5.2 [52] is ok but only when there are no problems

the network log might fill in some info - post that

Re: Speed very slow intermittently

Hi pda1984,

I'm really sorry for the delayed response to you, and to hear of the broadband issues you've been suffering from.

I've had a quick look at the back end of your services and I can't see any real problems with your hub specs. Everything is how we'd expect.

Let me know how your connection has been this week - if you're still experiencing problems, give me a shout and we'll go from there 🙂

Many thanks,

Beth

Re: Speed very slow intermittently

Hey @pda1984,

Sorry to hear that you've been having issues with you broadband connection. How is your connection running at the moment?

I have been able to look into your account from your community profile information and can see that your upstream levels are on the high side but our system shows this as still in the acceptable levels for a good connection.

Also, please could you set up a BQM monitor using this link here as it well help us track any issues that you maybe having and help us diagnose any issues that you may still be having.

Regards

Steven_L
