Slow speed (again)

Signed up to 350 a week ago. Sat by the router. Tested everyday. Unplugged and replugged, switched on and off. Reset. Virgin web set thinks its running ok.

Average download speed, various times of day, middle of Leeds - around 15mbs. Strangely upload speeds are fine - well at least in the 20s.

Needless to say there's no chance of talking to anyone about it, with call centres effectively shielded from people. So here I am, my last and only resort.

Any magic solutions?

Re: Slow speed (again)

What speed do you get using a direct connection using a Cat 5E/6 cable between the Hub in Router Mode and a 1Gbs capable Pc/Mac/Chromebook and no other devices connected ?

Re: Slow speed (again)

Thanks and good question, but I've only got a double headed Ethernet cable without the adapter to put it into the laptop. Maybe I should get one.

Re: Slow speed (again)

Plenty of USB to ethernet adaptors in the usual shopping places.

Make sure that anything you buy is 1Gbs capable.

Re: Slow speed (again)

Mike

Well that was educational, thank you. With cable download 80mbs (not brilliant, but can certainly live with it), without cable 11mbs. Please tell me I'm allowed to expect more from the wifi? Thanks

Chris

Re: Slow speed (again)

Welcome to the Trials & Tribulations of Wi-Fi

The problem with Wi-Fi is that it can be brilliant at breakfast time and useless by lunchtime and you haven't changed anything, BUT, something, somewhere has changed, then you can spend hours and even days trying to find a fix for something that can be totally out of your control.

If you remove all the internal walls, electronic and electrical devices, metallic pipes and conduits and wrap the whole building in a thick lead shield you will have a good chance of getting decent Wi-Fi from a VM Hub.

Many people have accepted that the VM Wi-Fi is poor and have purchased third party equipment that is much, much more powerful than the VM supplied kit and once set up have wondered why they waited for so long.

Only you know the ...

Budget,

Environment,

Workload the device will have to support.

Have a read of online PC and Networking mags to get an idea.

Re: Slow speed (again)

I use a Netgear Nighthawk R8000P in a large ex farmhouse with very thick stone external walls and brick internal walls with large chimney breasts and get excellent coverage throughout.

Whatever you go get make sure that it is Gigabit capable.
