Slow broadband speed

Hey Everyone,

I've recently been experiencing poor download speeds.  I've read and tried many of the suggested fixes, switching on and off, reset hub, etc.

I'm on the M200 but upgrading to M500 next week but wondering if there's any point if the best speed I'm getting lately is around 50mbps and upload of 19.9mbps.

I tried online chat and phoning but its impossible to get hold of anyone.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Slow broadband speed

There's certainly no point upgrading and giving VM more money if they aren't delivering your current speeds.  Get the performance sorted, then use it for a week or two and see if you really can justify upgrading.  My M200 is always happy to trundle along at 217-221 Mbps anytime of day or night, so they can make it work.

As a start on that, how are you measuring speeds, what's the sort of setup and use in the property.  Connect to the hub by clicking on this link http://192.168.0.1/  That should pull up the login page for the hub.  But don't log in, just click on the link "Check router status"  That'll bring up a window with five tabs.  All we need is the contents of the three titled Downstream, Upstream, Network log, and if you can post that as text not screenshots it will help.

Re: Slow broadband speed

If there's a fault somewhere that is drastically reducing your speed at the moment, it would be best to get that fixed first.

When you are measuring that 50 Mb download speed, what device are you measuring it on and how is it connected to the Hub?

Re: Slow broadband speed

Firstly thank you for your support.

I completely agree and in hindsight I should have checked my download speed more regularly to ensure I'm getting the speeds I'm promised and brought it up with the online chat agent at the time of upgrading.  However I have upgraded my package to the oomph package and the M500 upgrade is included.  Its only £15 more than I pay now for a whole lot extra.

The M200 was working fine earlier in the year and prior to that I was on M100 which again worked fine and usually reached maximum speeds or after a switch on and off.  Nothing has changed since, the router is in the same location it has always been in and produced maximum speeds.

I'm measuring speeds using the app Speedtest by Ookla.  I've used it on my phone primarily and that is where the speed is at the low end.  But I suspected you may want me to test on a wired connection and as I type this guess what it's reaching download speeds of 218mpbs and upload of 21.09mbps.

I have 3 ethernet ports in use, one for my dvr, tivo box and smart TV.  I can have in addition upto 8 devices connected via WiFi.  I reset the router and tried the speed test with only one WiFi device and it was on average 50mbps.

Just seems odd that the WiFi element is not reaching speeds as it should when in the past it has.

Additional info as requested.

Re: Slow broadband speed

WiFi speeds do change, quite often it's because of interference from adjacent properties.  I would suggest you look at the several WiFi Wins hints that you will find around this site. Certainly you should check if a change of channels on the two bands can make an improvement.

As it stands, you are not going to find an improvement to your WiFi speeds when the broadband service is upgraded.
