M500 very slow, less than 100mb

Hi - I have the M500 broadband package, and noticed that my download speed is very slow. When I ran a speed test when connected via network cable direct to my Hub 3, top speed I am getting is 100mb, but it can vary between 30 and 100. Tried calling VM, but last stage I got to was they will send me a link to report the fault via a text, which I never received. I have done a factory reset a week ago, that has not resolved the issue.

Can you Login to the Hub Settings and navigate to the Connected Devices page - what does it report the 'connection speed’ as for the cable connected device you used for the speed test ?

OK.

That points to either an iffy ethernet cable

or

The device Network Interface Card (NIC) is either old and maxed out or set wrong .

Simplest test is to use another Cat 5E / 6 cable.

Ok, previous test was on an old laptop. Changed to a newer laptop and checked the Connected Devices page on my hub, speed for this device is shown as 1000 mbps. Ran https://www.speedtest.net, and got 139 mbps first time, second time got 100mbps, which is still poor when I am contracted to M500.

Changed from old cat5 to new cat8 cable, now getting 320mbps download speed.

We seem to be getting somewhere.

Now for the copying and pasting ...

Can you set up a Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at thinkbroadband.com - this will give you an insight into what is happening with the signal at the other side of the Hub, it will take a few hours to get any kind of trend showing although you should post the link straight away.

Post a link to your BQM on here.

Instructions for posting BQM Link

Under your BQM graph are two links in red.

Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then click generate.

Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see.

On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon)

In the URL box paste the link you copied and in the ‘text to display’ box write My BQM then click OK - you can post the link straight away.

Type 192.168.0.1 (192.168.100.1 in Modem mode) into your browser URL bar and press enter. 

Hub 2 & 3 When the page appears DO NOT LOG IN but click ‘Check Router Status’.

Hub 4 When the page appears LOG IN then click ‘Check Router Status’.

Copy and paste the contents of the Downstream, Upstream and Network Log tabs onto here, if you get a yellow / straw box warning click the Post button again. Use one post for each tab if you wish. Please do not use screen grabs.

A Guru will be along soon to decipher the info.
