M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Hi All

Hoping someone can help with a strange and unusual issue with my Virgin M500.

I have some slow broadband speeds and have tried all the various troubleshooting methods. This is a new installation, and the engineer reached over 450Mpbs on his app after installation.

A little insight into my setup:
VM Hub 3 in modem mode connected to an Ubiquiti Edge Router X and Unify NanoHD access point.

I have the default VLAN and two other VLANS, none of them are throttled.

I have also turned the Hub into Router mode to do troubleshooting to ensure its not the ER-X

WLAN speeds seem to be faster than Ethernet.

For example, on WLAN i am generally getting 110-150Mbps on speedtest
When i connect using LAN and disabling WLAN, i only manage to get about 70Mbps. i know its usually the other way around so that's whats confusing me. Upload is consistent at 37Mbps on both LAN and WLAN

I have tried with another laptop, and get the same results. tried using cat6 and cat 5 cables, same results.

Below are the stats from the HUB.

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Can you carry out a couple of speed tests at speedtest.net using a direct connection using a Cat 5E/6 cable between the Hub and a 1Gbs capable Pc/Mac/Chromebook and no other devices connected.

Ensure that the Network Interface Card (NIC) drivers are up to date.

Then post the links to the results on here.

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Thanks for replying Mike. Do you mean plugging laptop directly into port 4 of the Hub while in modem mode? I will only be able to do that either do that at lunch time or after work

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Leave the Hub in Modem Mode, disconnect all the ethernet cables then connect to the laptop with a known good cable and retest.

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

I can't find the Ubiquiti Edge Router X on there website do you mean the ER-X ?

Regardless the EX-X model does do 1 gig through put as long as fast-path is enable. Even if it isn't it should handle what your network is capable off.

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Okay looking a bit deeper forum posts suggest you need to enable hardware offloading if not the speeds drop one hell of a lot.

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Thanks TheChairman. I have already enable hardware offloading. but will double check the change had applied.

I will test later today after work directly into the hub with only the laptop and check the speeds i am getting and post the results.

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Evening all

Took my laptop upstairs, plugged directly into the hub and restarted the hub. Performed multiple tests with just the laptop connected. results pretty shocking:

60.20
105.85
35.01
83.20
68.24

occasional boosts up to 150 but drops straight back to the 60-80 range

Plugged rest of my equipment back in, restarted the hub again and got these results:

71.6
63.78
65.37

so pretty much the same.

Uploads are always consistent at 37Mbps. At lunch time i managed to see a 215, but that still less than 50% of what im expecting. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thaks

Alex

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Check that the laptop NIC is set to 100/1000 and the drivers are up to date.

Also try a different ethernet cable or even 2.

Re: M500 Slow LAN and WLAN

Hi there

Drivers up to date and different cables, tested with NIC set to auto-negotiate, got 214.41 and set to 1Gbps full duplex and got 194.76

Yesterday got similar speed at 11:47am of 215.56
