M200 - slow upload speed

Hi folks,

Hope you are all doing well.

After the unpleasant battles with customer service to get someone out to finish my install, I am finally up and running. The engineer had ran a new cable and tested everything before signing off. I am on M200 package, while the download speed is as expected 150-210mpbs, I am experiencing slow upload speed -  the advertised upload speed is 20mpbs average, I am only getting 2-4mbps. This is slower than my previous "slow" xDSL connection and causes issues sometime as we all WFH at the moment.

Could someone take a look at the stats for me please and advise if I need to get an engineer to fix it? I really hope I don't have to speak to the CS again.

Thanks.

Re: M200 - slow upload speed

One of your upload streams is on the wrong modulation and should all be 64 QAM and you have a lot of T3 Time outs which could indicate a line fault. Have you Checked service status and also called 0800 561 0061 for the most up to date faults information in your area.

Also can you please setup a Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at thinkbroadband.com. Just click on Create a new monitor.

Under your graph you just created Click (Share Live Graph)

Copy the text in the “Direct Link” box and paste it on here

Re: M200 - slow upload speed

thanks conman, I have been reading about the upstream QAM drops on the forum and this seems to be a common issue.. I hope it is something easy to fix.

Re: M200 - slow upload speed

The QAM does change depending on line noise but because you have T3 Timeouts it points towards a line fault. Your BQM will hopefully show something but will need a few hours to populate, typically overnight to build a picture of what's happening 🙂

In the meantime you can try calling it in. Best to ring Virgin on or just after 8am on 0345 454 1111 or alternatively you can wait here for a Virgin staff member to pick it up, but unfortunately this will typically be between 5-10 days, sometimes sooner, sometimes later depending on how busy they are. If you decide to call it in it will run through a few automated options and after that ring back again and it should recognise that you have rang previously and then put you in the queue for a Virgin representative.

Re: M200 - slow upload speed

Your BQM does not look too good so far mate, it could be a case of over utilization 😞

Re: M200 - slow upload speed

ye.. seems to be all over the places.. not sure about others but at least compared to yours.

Over utilization in terms of my end or Virgin's end? Is this something an engineer can help?

cheers.

Re: M200 - slow upload speed

It's a case of too many customers on the system, Virgin are over subscribing and lockdown is causing to much of a load on the network. It's a never ending story with VM at the minute as the network is dealing with a load like never before with people working from home, home schooling, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Gaming threw into the mix. I think Virgin are hoping after lockdown it will settle down but until then you’re stuck. You can ring Virgin about this with maybe a fix date for the future but to be honest they have a tendency to apply fix dates only to keep moving them forward and then ending up with nothing being done for months at a time or simply hoping people leave freeing up the network or again hoping that things improve after lockdown. If your new to Virgin you have a cooling of period within 14 days giving you the right to cancel, you'd be better off giving them a call in case it's a line fault but judging by your BQM is shows that it settles in the early hours then back up again during busy hours.

Re: M200 - slow upload speed

Thanks for the explanation. Something I really hope it is not the case but makes sense. However the weird thing is that the download speed doesn't seem to be affected that much... I wouldn't mind for the download speed to drop a bit to maintain a more usable upload speed.. Can virgin do something to free up some download channel for upload?

I do have virgin TV and phone as well.. could it contribute to the issue? e.g. taking up bandwidth? TV box throwing noise to the line etc.

Would running the hub in modern mode help? I do have a more powerful router but I wanted to get any issues resolved before configure everything in modern mode... saw a lot of threads asking people to switch back to Router mode for troubleshooting...
