Hi - I have had very low download speeds for months and assumed it was because of the number of devices on my network. There are around 35 devices in the house but much fewer are in use at any one time. I did some tests yesterday to see if I could figure out why the download speed was so low.
I am on the 600Mbps service but normally get 20-40Mbps
The router homepage showed 17 wireless devices and 4 Ethernet devices
I ran a speed test and the result was around 40Mbps
I then disabled WiFi so that the only devices connected were 3 or 4 via Ethernet. I ran another test on my main PC connected via Ethernet and the result was around 40Mbps
I ran a longer Ethernet cable from my PC directly into the router (Hub 3) - the speed result was then approx 80Mbps
I am consistently getting the same results which show my upload speed is higher than my download speed
Having reduced the number of devices to just a handful of Ethernet-connected devices and still getting 40Mbps it seems to rule out the chance of this being caused by too many connected devices.
Having plugged directly into the router and only seen 80Mbps this I believe shows there is a problem. In the past I have seen speeds (occasionally) of around 400Mbps, but not in the last few months.
Am I likely being throttled? Or could there be an issue with the line?
