If I upgrade my broadband do I have to start a new contract?

I'm enquiring on behalf of my landlord. they have a Virgin broadband contract and I'm willing to pay the difference to upgrade to a faster broadband plan. 

1) Will an upgrade mean they must start a whole new contract, or can it be applied to the remainder of the existing contract?

2) Will they be able to downgrade later on if they wish?

No need to start a new contract.

If it is an upgrade then your landlord will have to ask for this if they are the account holder.
