Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

Hi,

I was wondering if any Hub 4 users on the Gig1 product have been able to get WiFi speeds above 650-700mb and if so what device(s) support this?

I am able to get a maximum speed of 950mb using Ethernet, so I am confident I am receiving the full 1 gig speed but I am unable to get anything higher than 650-700mb using WiFi on my iPhone 11 and my newish hp G5 laptop WiFi.

I would love to know if anyone is able to get the full 1 gig over WiFi and how they have managed it! Thanks!

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

See recent useful info below from @Tudor and second link from Intel to compare your expectations (note the ref to 60/40 ratio mentioned in link 1 against the headline figures)

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Tech-Chatter/Useful-info-on-5Ghz-WiFi-speeds/m-p/4352605

https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/support/articles/000005725/network-and-i-o/wireless.html

iPhone 11 specs here https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-11/specs/

and Hub 4 wireless specs here

https://www.virginmedia.com/corporate/media-centre/press-releases/virgin-media-launches-gig1-the-uks...

so your quoted figures of 650-700 Mbps sound right on the money for what you might reasonably expect (notwithstanding any local conditions where you are testing)

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

Thanks @goslow - that’s very useful information to have!

So in theory, if you have the 1Gig product, its unlikely that you will ever see 1Gig+ WiFi speeds unless you have a device that supports the elusive 4x4 MIMO spec?

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

Yes that is correct and, even then, that would be under ideal circumstances notwithstanding any other factors in your local wireless/building environment which might reduce the performance.

Some other iPhone 11/Hub 4 users may chip in with their real-world stat's for comparison but the figures you have mentioned getting for your iPhone are certainly in line with expectations, if not a little bit better.

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

Perfect, thanks! Ive heard the new iPhone 12 and new Apple devices will have 4x4 MIMO as standard, so I’ll wait and see! Thanks again for all the advice!

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

You will not get near that esp since I found out the HUB4 is not 160mhz (I was told at launch it was) added to fact it would be stretching it on WIFI 5ac 80mhz

My last card was WIFI 5ac 160mhz 1734Mb/s and new one is WIFI 6ax 160mhz 2400Mb/s obviously that is ideal speed not real speed so will be lower.

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

I think Virgin expect you to spread the 1GB over multiple connections (WiFi and ethernet) as it can't provide the full bandwidth over a single dedicated connection even if it's wired.

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

That is their "Get out of jail card", or that the HUB4 can receive 1.1Gb/s (+10% Contention) from the Coax and you can sometimes see this if you are lucky in the SamKnows (random speeds) Software built into HUB4.

Never going to get out the LAN port to one device or WIFI.

Roll on the HUB4ax (like from the SH2 > SH2ac) 😁

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

I was wondering if there was any way to bridge the WiFi and ethernet connections. I have tried it but the speeds just seem to drop away down. I am using the Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9260 160MHz but again can only get it to connect to the Hub 4 at 866 Mbps whereas I could connect to my old BT Hub at 1.3Gbps.

Re: Hub 4 WiFi speeds - anyone getting near 1 gig?

It seems that by configuring the output of the Hub 4 appropriately and having the right equipment on the other sid... you can combine two LAN outputs into a single connection and realise the full speed potential on a single connection.  Although you're going to have to want to dabble with technology, because this doesn't look in the slightest bit plug'n'play.
