Having 1/3 speed from local, UK servers

Hiya. New to THIS account.. but have been with virgin for the last 10 years or so, at different addresses and... I have to admit, normally, I loved their service (most of the time). but I moved house and at the new place ordered the 500mbps service. it worked well for the first 2 weeks. downloading anything from reasonable servers went roughly at 50-60MB/s, and then it just slumped. If I try downloading anything from steam, origin, epic, battle.net or wargaming servers, that are located in uk, my max download speed is 23MB/s. no matter what time of the day, what service size of the file or anything else. it looks actually capped. the interesting part is - I can get better speeds when downloading from US or mainland Europe and if it's a global torrent client, it actually maxes out at 58-59MB/s. yet if I'm downloading from UK based servers - capped at less than half of the speed I should be seeing.

Can't really blame french ISP in this case, because connections to europe seem faster than within UK itself.

speedtest.net shows full speed, when tested. actually, slightly above 500mbps down and 36-37mbps up.

PS.:
I seem to get higher download speeds if I select servers (on any of the above mentioned launchers/apps) that are located OUTSIDE UK. strange, to say the least.

What speed do you get at >> speedtest.net << with a direct connection using a Cat 5E/6 cable between the Hub in Router Mode and a 1Gbs capable Pc/Mac/Chromebook and no other devices connected ?

Your >> speed test << looks OK to me.

Maybe the sites you are visiting are slow ?

Re: Having 1/3 speed from local, UK servers

well, the sites you're talking about are steam launcher, origin launcher, wargaming launcher, epic launcher, riot launcher, battle.net (blizzard) launcher.... and if changed the settings to outside UK servers, the speeds go up. Issue being every single gaming server within UK - that's what confuses me. I get better speeds from abroad servers than local ones.

Re: Having 1/3 speed from local, UK servers

Downloads from Origin and Steam (and I suspect most of the others) are hosted by Akamai and are often served from cache servers within VM's network, which should in theory improve the speed

Can you post a traceroute to the URLs below to see if anything shows up

akamai.cdn.ea.com
steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net

Re: Having 1/3 speed from local, UK servers

as for akamai served by VM... and etc., does that mean ALL of those mentioned above.. and i believe i mentioned 5 or 6 are running on VM?

there is one exception to this issue.. it is EVE Online (by CCP) that actually runs at an average of 100MB/s... which is really above my service... but it does. can download the game in about 3 minutes. speed starts at 125MB/s then drops to 100-105MB/s 😄 right now, finishing the download via steam of that same game (mechwarrior) and it's running between 61 and 62MB/s. as soon as i switch to UK server - 22-23mb/s

Re: Having 1/3 speed from local, UK servers

Your screenshot in post 7 shows speeds in MB/s.

That's Megabytes, not Megabits which your Virgin Media connection is rated at.

Your speed is not as low as you think.
