Re: Gig1

How are you testing the speed?

Say you had a file that was 1GB in size to download and you had a 1Gb/s broadband line:

To get your download speed in BYTES per second (Broadband speed is measured in bits per second) you'd need to divide by 8 (8 bits to the byte)

so If you are downloading a file and it is coming in at 100 MB(ytes) per second - then you'd need to multiply by 8 to get your speed in Mb(its) per second - in this case 800. Which, depending on many factors, site bandwidth of the route etc would be pretty good and acceptable for a 1Gb/s connection!

Hope this helps and apologies if I'm 'teaching my granny to suck eggs'

Re: Gig1

Also note that not every website or service supports you even downloading at 100mbps let alone 1000mbps.

If fact, not even your router can obtain 1gbps as it only has 1gbps ports!

You need to run a dedicated testing site such as https://samknows.com/realspeed/ or Ookla's https://www.speedtest.net/

The later will likely give a lower speed.

Re: Gig1

How does any of that help him?

He has a new PC so it cannot be a 10/100Mb/ NIC so it could be stuck on 100Mb/s (he would need to check in Device Manager).

Plenty sites will give you more than 100Mb/s in fact 1Gb/s or more this is 2021 and assume he has tried multiple sites/sources and it is funny the limit is 100Mb/s.

He should be able to get in real life use 940MB/s approx. from the 1Gb/s port on the HUB4.

Re: Gig1

I'm thinking he's seeing 100MB/s not 100Mb/s which = 800Mb/s

Trying to ascertain exactly how he's measuring speed!

If I download a file, I get between 10 and 12 MB/s (80-96Mb/s) speed test shows 90-112 Mb/s

He says speedtest shows the full 1Gb/s but downloading is 100M(B/b)/s - I'm trying to work out which!

Hope this helps.

Re: Gig1

Meant Mb not MB above (cannot edit now) and could be the reason as it is easy to mix them up even if a typo like in my case.

Off the top of my head should be able to hit about 115-125MB/s, this was on day 1 of my 1Gb/s a while back so quiet near it.

Re: Gig1

I prefer that way for Internet Speed (not HDD/File Size) but just to be sure you are only getting 100Mb/ so approx. 10-12MB/s ?
