Gig1 speeds inconsistent and less than expected

Woodham
Joining in

I have upgraded from M500 to Gig1, and run multiple speed tests over the last couple of days - the download speed results are extremely inconsistent - anywhere between 200 and 900Mbps.

Upload seems fairly consistent around 50Mbps.

Can anyone have a look and see if everything seems ok here?

All that looks fine.

How are you testing speeds|? On wifi or ethernet connected devices? What devices? At what site - VM uses ... https://speedtest.samknows.com/ - try on 2 different browsers.

Note wifi speeds will always be less than ~600 as the Hub is only wifi 5 - you need your own wifi 6 enabled wireless equipment to see higher

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's & TP-Link Archer C64 WAP. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

Thanks for taking a look.

I have been using a variety of different speed test sites, but mostly https://www.speedtest.net/ and the built in speed test on my router (I use the hub in modem mode with my own router - a Unifi UDM)

Apart from the ones directly on my router, I'm testing on a desktop pc with a wired gigabit connection.

Thanks for suggesting that site, I just ran it a few times and again am getting wildly inconsistent results.

I have been running some more speed tests today with a laptop plugged directly into the hub with an ethernet cable (hub still in modem mode, but I restarted it for good measure).

While overall today the numbers are better, they are still inconsistent and not wholly impressive for a supposed 'gigabit' connection.

The best I've seen today is:

Latency

20.5 ms

But then I'm also often seeing results like this

I understand that a gigabit speed isn't technically guaranteed, but these are not very impressive results for a Virgin Network that was only installed in this area 2 or 3 years ago. So far it doesn't seem like the upgrade from M500 is worth it.

Ok, I've been doing some more research and found out about the samknows 'realspeed' test that works with Gig1.

It looks like there's something iffy about the speeds the hub is providing to ethernet connected devices to me - I'm going to try ordering a short new Cat8 cable to rule that out.

The below test was again with a single (short) wired Cat5e cable to a laptop.
