Gig1 Fibre with hub 4 getting 1 gig to router but only 400-500mbps to laptops and iphones

I have just upgraded and installed the hub 4 today.

I have tested with my windows 10 laptop with Intel AX200 wifi card, hub 4, Asus RT-AX88U router, cat 7 cable between hub 4 and asus router and using my iphone 11 pro max.

I left the hub 4 in router mode and ran the speedtest at Sam Knows - Real Speed on my laptop (wifi) and I am getting 1081mbps to the router but then only 4-500mbps to my laptop. This is on 5ghz wifi with the laptop next to the router - I think the virgin modem only supports AC wifi. Speedtest.net gives about 4-500mbps download 50mbps upload.  Ethernet seems to make not difference.

Normally I use the hub in modem mode with an Asus RT-AX88U router with my windows 10 laptop (Intel AX200 wifi card). Running a speed test on this setup gives about 400mb down and 50mb up. I also tested with my iphone 11 pro max which gives similar figures so it is not a windows driver issue,

My Asus router actually supports aggregation with dual ethernet cables but I have read the hub 4 doesn't support LACP-IEEE 802.3ad so this is of no use. I shouldn't need to use aggregation to get 1 gig anyway to my devices!

I'm paying to have the full 1 gig available so I'm pretty frustrated - Can anyone help at all please?

Re: Gig1 Fibre with hub 4 getting 1 gig to router but only 400-500mbps to laptops and iphones

You may want to call Customer Support (I had a similar issue but with Power (dBmV) at -10 rather than +10).

You will get put through to the dedicated Hub 4 team, just make sure they check those levels and send an engineer. You want the Power (dBmV) levels to be as close to 0 as possible. As MikeRobbo "Legend" said, it was in fact a power level issue for me. In my opinion the SamKnows tests (from hub 4) saying you are getting 1Gbps are as believable as some car manufacturers emissions claims 🤔.

The line faults were causing the issues for me. I was also told (maybe unofficially by 1 of the engineers) that VM are releasing a patch for "known Wi-Fi slow speed issues" around January next year which may be what you are having problems with.

Had an engineer around who said there is noise on the line and has booked for a new cable to be fitted tomorrow

Not sure what's wrong with the cable as it was only put in 2 years ago but if this works I don't really care why to be honest!

Re: Gig1 Fibre with hub 4 getting 1 gig to router but only 400-500mbps to laptops and iphones

I'd be really interested to see how this progresses. I have Gig1 with the router set in Modem mode and then connected to an Asus CT8 Mesh router.

When I run 'network Speed Test' from a device that is directly connected to one of the Asus routers gig port I get around 680-700Mbps. Of course a) you have to be careful what speed test you use and b) I have a 3rd party router (albeit with QoS disabled).

It would be interesting to see what speed you get using 'Network Speed test' (it's an app in the Microsoft Store if not already installed) before I pester Virgin

Re: Gig1 Fibre with hub 4 getting 1 gig to router but only 400-500mbps to laptops and iphones

Just to add to this as I have stated 'network Speed test' gets around the 680Mbps mark. I cant run SamKnows RealSpeed as my 3rd part router is SamKnows enabled but if I run some other 'decent' speed testing services as advised on here I get:

http://proof.ovh.net/ - circa 850-900Mb/s download / 52Mb/s upload

https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/broadband-test - around 650Mb/s download / 51<b/s upload

http://www.broadbandperformance.co.uk/ - ranges fro arounf 400Mb/s to nearly 900Mb/s download / 53Mb/s upload.

At least my uploads speeds are contant lol

Re: Gig1 Fibre with hub 4 getting 1 gig to router but only 400-500mbps to laptops and iphones

I use speedtest.net as Virgin seem to accept this test as I connect to an actual Virgin server in Birmingham.

The Sam Knows test seems like a load of rubbish to be honest as it says 1000 into my modem and then drops to 400ish on my laptop but I cannot replicate anywhere near that speed with other tests.

Had a new cable fitted Tues and surprise it wasn't that - The cable was 2 years old after all.  Called virgin multiple times but my speed problem was put down to a local area fault over the last couple of days even though this clearly isn't the problem.

The guys that fitted the cable have put it under my grass not even up the side and broke the brown box on the wall.  Didn't even ring the doorbell to say it was done just left.

On hold again now been passed between 4 different people so far and 1 hour 21 mins on the phone and am now sitting in a queue to speak to the second line hub 4 team?  Have given the details of my problems multiple multiple times.

The hold music has 4 songs that repeat and are terrible.

Absolute joke.
