Getting 3Mbps download speed on my 100mb connection

Hi All.

For the past few nights I have been getting extremely erratic speeds on my connection. At the moment it's 3mb. Then the next hour it will be back up to 10mb then full speed then back to 3.

Can anyone help? It's practically unusable at the moment.

Posting my diagnostics below.

Re: Getting 3Mbps download speed on my 100mb connection

What speeds do you get at >> speedtest.net << with a direct connection using a Cat 5E or better ethernet cable between the Hub in Router Mode and a 1Gbs capable Pc/Mac/Chromebook and no other devices connected ?

Then immediately after …

Can you Login to the Hub Settings and navigate to the Connected Devices page - what is the reported 'connection speed’ for the ethernet cable connected device you used for the speed test ?

If possible can you set up a Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at thinkbroadband.com - this will give you an insight into what is happening with the signal at the other side of the Hub, it will take a few hours to get any kind of trend showing although you should post the link straight away.

Please post a 'Live Link' to your BQM on here.

Instructions for posting BQM Live Link

Under your BQM graph are two links in red.

Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then click generate.

Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see.

On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon)

In the URL box paste the link you copied and in the ‘text to display’ box write My BQM then click OK - you can post the link straight away.

Re: Getting 3Mbps download speed on my 100mb connection

Thanks for your reply.

I don't have cable handy at the moment but here's a link to the monitor I set up earlier

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/e96552d1ad2a9f97af42b222d993f8259f...

Connection seemed fine most of the day apart from a complete drop out for a few minutes but now it's back down to about 10mbs.

It really does seem to be something that only happens in the evening.

Looks like overutilization on the BQM.

Re: Getting 3Mbps download speed on my 100mb connection

Is that something that I would need to call virgin about or will someone eventually pick up on my issue in here?

Is it even fixable?

Fixable yes, timelines are another question.

Lots of VM users on here complaining about slow speeds at peak times. You can clearly see this on your BQM:

You can phone it in however not sure how far you will get.

You can:

  • Wait for a response from one of the VM staff on here (1 - 2 weeks).
  • Text 07533 051 809.
  • Contact by phone 0345 454 1111 (8am is best).

Re: Getting 3Mbps download speed on my 100mb connection

Thanks.

Tried the text thing yesterday, it said they would get back to me within 4 hours and I haven't heard a thing since.

Hopefully someone picks it up from here.

Re: Getting 3Mbps download speed on my 100mb connection

Been terrible since about 4pm today.

It's consistently below 10mps.

Just incase anyone at virgin ever reads this.
