Different speed on laptop/PC

Danny84

So I have just had my Virgin Media internet installed today 200mb but I seem to be having some issues and wondered if anyone could help?

The router is downstairs, I tested the speed on the laptop and it is 200mb. I test the speed on the PC (upstairs) and I am only getting around 56mb slower than the internet I had before. So I tested the laptop again and hovered it over the PC area and the laptop gets around 190mb not the 56mb the PC is getting.

Why am I not getting the 200mb on my PC? It can't be the signal strength surely because I've tested the laptop in the same place as the PC. The only thing I can think of is the wifi card in the PC but I'm not sure, don't want to buy another needlessly.

I was going to bring the router upstairs and plug it direct into the PC but I realise I can't with this type of router because the short cable that you screw onto wall and box will not be long enough. The Engineer fitted it downstairs so unless anyone knows how to move them I am stuck with it downstairs.

I was thinking I could have a very long ethernet cable running from upstairs to downstairs, would that work just as well as plugging it in upstairs? That might solve the problem.

Yes that would work just fine - even if just as a temporary measure for testing.

If a device has an ethernet port, I would strongly suggest you use it.  Wifi is too prone to interference in a lot of instances.

Go for a Cat 6a shielded cable from a reputable supplier.

Well I have ordered this one, 30M CAT 6 I just hope it works. I wasn't sure if running it up the stairs will have an impact on speeds through length of cable. Hoping it will work.

Ok so got the cable and ran it upstairs from the router and I now get the 200mb speeds. I guess the wifi card in the PC is not upto much for faster speeds because the laptop wifi has no problems.

Anyway the PC is now wired with ethernet cable so everything is sorted now. Just thought I would update on it.

Thanks for everyones help.

I had a similar issue on an old laptop so I ended up getting a good quality 2.4/5GHz wifi dongle for about a tenner and it now gets full speeds on the wifi. Might be worth a punt if you cant make the ethernet connection permanent.
