Broadband speed slower since upgrade to 100Mbps

I was previously on a 50mbps connection. Whilst I very rarely got near 50Mbps I could normally rely on getting something around 35mbps.

VM gave me a free upgrade to 100mbps in February. They sent me a letter saying that:-

"We estimate that at peak times the download speed to your Virgin Media Hub will range between 108Mbps and 111Mbps and your upload speed will be 10Mbps. The minimum download speed to you Virgin Media Hub shouldn't fall below 54Mbps."

Since this "upgrade" my average download speed has been worse than it was before. I'm now lucky to get 20-25 mbps, nevermind 54 Mbps.

Can anyone help?

How are you testing the speed? The figures you're quoting sound like 2.4Ghz WiFi. You'll need to run a wired speedtest just to check the true speed that is being delivered and to rule out (or in) WiFi problems.

Re: Broadband speed slower since upgrade to 100Mbps

OK. So I plugged my laptop directly into my SuperHub3.

Performed the speed test and got 110Mbps download and 9.9 Mbps upload (more like it).

So why has the WiFi got so pants?? Even when sat right next to the hub I'm only 22Mbps download.

Re: Broadband speed slower since upgrade to 100Mbps

Done a bit more digging...

Used the Wifi Analyzer app on my phone and discovered that there was no 5GHz signal from the Hub.

Logged on and found these settings:-

Re: Broadband speed slower since upgrade to 100Mbps

2.4 GHZ - enabled, Channel = Manual

5 GHz - disabled

Smart WiFi - Disable Channel Optimization

I've not done this, and nobody else in the house knows how to do this.

How could this happen?

Hi DonnyDriver

Can I ask if you've downloaded the Virgin Media 'Connect' app?

Regards

Re: Broadband speed slower since upgrade to 100Mbps

Re-enable the 5Ghz band and see how it is after that.

Re: Broadband speed slower since upgrade to 100Mbps

I enabled the 5Ghz on my router.

I wouldn't say it's made a huge difference though. Speeds are sporadic and averaging still around 25 Mbps

Re: Broadband speed slower since upgrade to 100Mbps

Does your laptop have a suitable WiFi card?

As a test, turn off 2.4GHz in the Hub and see if the laptop still connects on 5GHz.
