Braodband is highly variable - latency is shocking

for the last week my broadband has been atrocious, it seems to be yoyo'ing from good to nothing. Work Webex / Slack calls drop out and freeze frequently. Tests through various websites and tools (including my router) can show excellent one minute, nothing the next. All devices have been rebooted and turned off for 5 mins to allow a full power down.

The ofgem checker shows.

x - Web browsing

x - Online Gaming

x - Internet calls

x - Video Calling

tick - Video Streaming (HD)

tick - Video streaming (4k)

I'm guessing both the latter because of buffering capabilities.

a) Yes it's my test machine in directly connected, Yes Cat 5/6

b) I've also tested via WIFI with the same results.

c) Yes I've rebooted all equipment.

Re: Braodband is highly variable - latency is shocking

Could you access your router using http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.100.1 for modem mode . You shouldn't need log in, select the 'Check Router Status' option and paste your 'Downstream', 'Upstream', and 'Network Log' tabs?

Re: Braodband is highly variable - latency is shocking

My router is in Modem mode, but the 192.168.100.1 doesn't work, even when I directly connect into the router. How can I get these logs?

What I can show is this below. As you can see latency and packet loss are 'spikey' / intermittent particularly during the week making work problematic. And of course the Virgin self check just says everything is fine...

Re: Braodband is highly variable - latency is shocking

Your >> BQM << is a mess.

In Modem mode only one ethernet port is active so ensure that you disconnect your router cable from the Hub then connect your device.

Re: Braodband is highly variable - latency is shocking

Sorry if I've interpreted your post correctly, I did...

To get to the the virgin router (in modem mode), I tried through my router at first and this failed. I then disconnected my router and plugged my machine directly into the modem (virgin router) (same ethernet port as router) and tried to connect using 192.168.100.1. This failed. What am I doing wrong?

Try 192.168.0.1

Re: Braodband is highly variable - latency is shocking

No I've tried a number of things and none are working. The Virgin site says to go with 192.168.100.1 and I've tried this on a number of machines / browers, none of which are working.

Re: Braodband is highly variable - latency is shocking

Yeah it’s incredibly flakey. Our SH3 only gets to 192.168.100.1 about half the time.
