Bad packet loss and speed drops 4pm onwards

Hi,

Told to spin this off into its own thread as it was in someone elses.

My usual speeds are ~300-350MB until 4pm rolls around and then it drops to less than 0.5MB. However streaming services such as Youtube and Netflix are unaffected. This has happened for the last 2 days. On the other thread two other people were having the exact same issue and posted near identical BQM graphs.

I'm on 350MB package, Hub 3 in modem mode.

Re: Bad packet loss and speed drops 4pm onwards

Yeah - I was the OP, and I didnt have a problem with you posting on it - was the same issue.

For what its worth, our BQM graphs are very similar

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/a256fcdad81196bc9ed49a2ed7f2b0a982...

Fast.com for me is 400+Mpbs

Various ookla speed test servers are showing aound  10down/40up https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/d/38014dfa-b141-4c39-b478-4e947cec989c

I'm on the 1Gig package. Hub 4 modem.  Sites that VM peer with seem appear ok, so I suspect there's a core network load issue that we're not going to find out about.

Did you notice that the problem from yesterday disappeared around midnight, and reappeared again at 3.45 ?

Day 3 of same issue.

I can't watch the football anymore on iPlayer due to this. Getting **bleep** off with the lack of service now.

Re: Bad packet loss and speed drops 4pm onwards

Same here.

Clearly its not an issue at the customer end as  some peered services are OK.

I'll try running a few traceroutes and see if that reveals anything.

Whereabouts are you? I'm in Surbiton, KT5 and I think we're connected to Croydon via New Malden.

Re: Bad packet loss and speed drops 4pm onwards

Thinkbroadband (that provide the broadband quality monitors) appear to use cloudflare, and my traces seem to show that it's cloudflare that have the issue (I believe virgin may peer with cloudflare).

Cloudflare of course host all sorts of stuff, so that might be our smoking gun.

Anyone who knows more about these things care to comment?

Re: Bad packet loss and speed drops 4pm onwards

I have this issue as well, every day starting around 4pm until midnight some websites become very slow. Other websites are unaffected. It appears to affect Cloudflare sites as the other poster said, but I'm also noticing it on some non-cloudflare sites as well. Connected to Croydon headend. I found some twitter messages from random people also talking about it and mentioning Croydon

Re: Bad packet loss and speed drops 4pm onwards

I've been having the same issue this week, but I'm not sure if this is actually a Virgin Media issue now. If I connect via a VPN (I'm using NordVPN) to a node in the UK I get the same speed and packet loss problem to some sites (and in online games too). If I connect to a node in Germany, those same sites and (games) load and work fine for me.
