Around 200mbps on vivid 350

Hi. I've read a few of the posts on here and checked the speed sticky but not sure how to trouble shoot my slower than expected connection.

We've had vivid 350 for a about four months now and we generally get around 200mbps download. The upload at 37mbps. This is constant across the day and across the week.

I've tried this on hub mode and modem mode. On modem mode currently.

Is there something I have done wrong on setup (using gigabit network capable pc and cable)? Or is this just the speed I am to get?

Many thanks for your help!

Adam

Re: Around 200mbps on vivid 350

There are are a lot of things that can affect your download speeds. Some of the recent ones reported on here are linked below. More recently, people using Chrome have had issues. Also Dell's running "Smartbyte" can be speed limited. Also some have had "dodgy" switches in the loop. And powerline adapters obviously limit speeds.

Can you test speeds with the laptop booted into safe+networking mode and the Hub in modem mode - with a new Cat6 ethernet cable - test on a VM server at speedtest.net (on Firefox).

Re: Around 200mbps on vivid 350

You're a star. So I tested direct connection to the hub in modem mode (and for other people, restarting the hub gave me an IP address otherwise windows would not get an IP and assigned itself a random one) and still got around 200mb.

I then rebooted into safe mode as you noted and whoa! I got 368mb! It was like turning on a light, suddenly it all works. This was tested at peak time on Friday around 8pm.

I then reconnected up the router I use and all the cabling back to its normal setup and tested again still in safe mode. About 360mb. So that's within margins of error, so that proves not the router but likely to be something with Windows 10.

So just out of curiosity I booted a Linux live CD (Linux Mint) and that gave me around 350mb. So again within margins of error. These were all on the same machine.

So lastly I tested back in non-safe mode windows both chrome and firefox and was back to below 200mb.

So I think this proves that it is something with Windows. I had a look at the links below but not sure how to diagnose what part of windows is "broken" as the person with the issue in one of the links below just reinstalled windows which I could do but would rather not do!

Any help would be appreciated and thank you so much for getting me this far!

Re: Around 200mbps on vivid 350

Happy to help - but windows is a no go area for me - never owned anything running it - Macs all the way since the 1980's 🙂

I would suggest starting by disabling things one at a time - like any antivirus package. Is it a Dell - they often run SmartByte in the background - which limits speeds - or other makes may do similar.

Hopefully a windoze guru will come along shortly with better suggestions.
