72MBPS rather than 500MBPS

Hello, I'm paying for 500mbps broadband. We're working from home and home schooling two teenagers. Internet speed is shocking. I just checked using Virgin's own broadband speed checker and it came back as 72MBPS. It's effectively useless. What can I do? What should Virgin be doing and how can I get them to do it without sitting in a phone queue for an hour..?

Re: 72MBPS rather than 500MBPS

OK, so now I'm getting 27MBPS. I tried calling customer services and was simply sent round and round their automated systems. They checked the line, suggested i turned the router on and off again. Broadband isn't any better. This is such a poor service and even worse customer care.

Usual questions on here.
How are you connected (wired/wireless), what speed test are you using and on what device.

Can you post your connection statistics from your SH. Connect to the hub with a web browser and copy and paste the results here.
(If you don't know how to do that, post back and we'll walk you through it)

Re: 72MBPS rather than 500MBPS

Hello Eeps,

I'm connected by Wi-Fi. Currently getting less than 20 MBPS. Using OFCOM online speed tester on my IMac computer. All devices are running so slow as to be virtually useless.

No idea how to do a SH test. Please advise.

Thanks

Lee

Re: 72MBPS rather than 500MBPS

you MUST test speeds on a wired connection with a gigabit network device.

Wifi speeds have no speed garantees

Re: 72MBPS rather than 500MBPS

a computer or laptop with a 1 gigabit network card and not a older 10/100 network card.

If you test with a 10/100 wired connection you will not get above about 90mbps

What speeds do you get wired?

Re: 72MBPS rather than 500MBPS

OK, I'll give that a go later, thanks.

Assuming the test comes back with a terrible speed rating....how does one get Virgin to listen and act upon this information?
