1Gb average speed help

Hi there,

As its near impossible to get through to Virgin on the phone I was wondering if there is anyone who knows what the actual average speed should be for the 1Gb download and tell a way to check everything to do with the connection or even arrange a visit from an engineer to check the old cabling I have. I have read I should get something between 1094 - 1140 Mbps with a measlely guaranteed speed of 565 Mbps which is shocking with the price you pay.

Any help would be most appreciated

First thing to try is https://samknows.com/realspeed/

Actual download speed really varies depending on the speed of the server you are downloading from but this will tell you speed at router.

You could try using a download manager such as IDM and then try downloading a large file from a game site or something like that.

Another option is download a torrent which is got many seeds for example Ubuntu server torrent this should max out your connection.

You could also use the normal speed tests available but these don't always prove to be accurate.

I can max out my connection on non encrtpted connection at around 65MB/s or around 45MB/s with SSL

Can you test speeds directly like this. As you expect >100Mbps then connect a 1GB enabled computer/laptop, with up to date drivers, via a NEW and working Cat5e/6a ethernet cable, directly to the Hub which you have put into “modem mode” (https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-hub-modem-mode ). This ensures that NO other devices are connected

Test speeds at https://speedtest.samknows.com/ - try on 2 different browsers as Chrome sometimes gives odd results.

If they are still low – boot your device into Windows safe+networking mode - to disable any potentially interfering software - and try again.

There are many posts on here (I have a list of ~30!) where QoS software, anti-virus, unknown/flaky software, old network card drivers, corrupted browsers, bad cables or other connected devices are limiting speeds on tests.

Report back what that gets.

For examples of why... see message 7 in the first thread and 9 in in the second and 3 in the third

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

Thank you for the replies. I did the SamKnows speed test and the result was 1146 Mbps to the Hub 4 and then 945 Mbps from the hub to the PC. I've tried eliminating the problem by disabling different pieces of software with no luck.. I've also tried a different ethernet cable with no luck also. I know my Network card is a 1 Gb card so could that be the problem at all ??

So this sounds absolutely correct for 1gb. What's the actual issue, are you expecting faster when downloading?

Download a test torrent or something from a fast reliable server using a download manager such as IDM.

Either way sounds like the connecting from hub to pc is fine.

Sorry I was just expecting for the speed would be the same from the outside box through to the PC. Just didn't expect to lose nearly 200mb download speed between the two thats all

That's limitations of 1gb ethernet adapters in order to achieve the maximum speed you will need router and nic with 2.5gbe

Does your PC have a 2.5GbE or higher ethernet adapter?

Even then the HUB 4 only has 1Gbps ethernet ports.

You'd need the HUB 5 that has one 2.5Gbps port to get full speed to one device.

Gig1 is designed to be shared across multiple devices at the same time.

Hi there @bemybezzyman

Thank you so much for your post and welcome back to the forums, also a big thank you to our community members who have assisted on this so far.

It does sound as though you are getting the expected speeds for your package.

Have you been able to try the steps recommended by @carl_pearce at all?

Thank you.

Ashleigh,

Carl didn’t actually recommend any steps at all for the OP to follow. Rather he was just pointing out the reality of the situation, ie on a Hub 4 you will never, ever get more than about 940 Mb/s download speed over Ethernet.

Tell me, did you actually read the thread and understand what was being discussed, before crashing in with a standard scripted response? Be honest, you didn’t did you?😳
